Day 17. Husøy to Fredrikstad via Tønsberg.

The section up to Midgard historic centre ran through forest the shade from the sun was most welcome. As we exited the forest we saw a sign explaining the historical significance of the site, with many viking burial mounds being found in the area. Within sight of the gate and sign there was the museum itself in a modern building that was beautiful and striking. The museum building is shaped a bit like a viking longship. Had we had more time then we would have had a look round. However as it is within cycling distance of Sandefjord we decided that we could fly there for a long weekend and have a mooch round looking at museums and interesting sites between Sandefjord and Horton.

Damae marked on the map the last 5 km up to Horton with the note 'poorly signposted' which it was. As much of the route in that section it looked perfectly straight which did not help. At least we were certain which direction we had to go, unlike earlier in the route where it wound its way round the coast, heading at times North South East and West.

Finally we started to get near to the ferry terminal and could see the big ferry that ran across to Moss. As luck had it we had time to buy a new memory card for the camera, having run out of space on the 140MB of cards we had take with us and get the next ferry. Shame we couldn't buy one earlier as the most amazing scenery was far behind us.

The ferry was fun. After we stowed the bikes away Damae wandered round for a bit taking arty pictures whilst I headed to the cafeteria. We decided to eat well there and had a sandwich each in addition to something sweet with coffee. We were fully rested as we left the boat, and stopping to check the route we then tried to find the way out of the harbour.

Suddenly the road ended, we'd missed the turning, which we found a couple of minutes later. Doing the route the right way round it would have been a steep descent, however for us it was an uncycleable climb 300m or so. Still once up top the going returned to normal, and we headed back down the Oslofjorden before turning inland.

In the middle of the afternoon we hit the 1000km mark for the trip. My trip meter went from 999.99 to 000.00. Behind us 1000km of Norway and in front of us a hundred or so to the Swedish border.
