Where am I?:^mistymornings-->Cycletouring-->2008-->Norway.-->Day 32

Day 32-2. Magnor to Sukken Camping, Berger contd.

However we were ready for a break and as we popped onto the RV 170 on the edge of Bjørkelangen as if by magic a petrol station appeared. We parked up the bikes and went inside out of the pouring rain. We stood in the shop dripping water everywhere and treated ourselves to a couple of cups of coffee. It was just good to be out of the cold and wet for a few minutes. We saw a couple of DVD's on special offer and picked up a copy of Hot Fuzz with Norwegian subtitles. It was a bargain at NOK 99.

After a quick loo stop the inevitable could no longer be avoided. We got back on our bikes and headed for Hemnes, the next place on the map that might have some shops. Surprisingly, we made the twenty or so kilomtres to the edge of Hemnes in an hour. I guess that tail wind must have been favourable. However the rain was not and we had cycled in the continous pouring rain from Bjørkelangen all the way to Hemnes. Here we did some groceries and stood out of the rain under the eaves of a building and had another snack.

We wondered about where we were going to stay tonight. With the rain we really wanted to have a hot shower and somewhere to cook. But the first campsite at Berger was still around thirty-five to forty kilometres away and it was already past half five. In addition Damae was slowing a bit already and not feeling much better than in the morning.

We decided to push on with the option of wild camping if it all got too much. We set out on through the rolling countryside. The rain had stopped by now which made life easier and some of the roads were quite flat. Damae also enjoyed the section from Hemnes to Ydersbotn, where we skirted the Øgdern lake and the landscape remained expansive and rolling. It was a lot less tedious than the two days before Kongsvinger and Damae was managing to keep going albeit at a rather gentle pace.

I kept on pulling away from her and then waiting for her to catch up. I took the opportunity to get the camera out and take photos as the light started fading in the evening sky. It got dark enough for our B&M lights to come on which made us more visible. Not that there was much traffic to be seen. Damae even got her camera out when she stopped to adjust her clothing and took a picture of Stan far away in the distance.

Along the way we heard crickets chirping away in long grass and ripening wheat. Given how wet most of the day had been, it was surprising that anything felt chirpy this evening. It cheered us up though, giving us the feeling again that this was a summer holiday rather than an autumn one.

At half past eight we entered Marker Kommune, actually a rather abstract event as we were not quite sure where Marker Kommune actually was, nor how far it was to Berger. Shortly afterwards, just past Rakkestad we crossed over Rødenessjøen on a suspension bridge that seemed like overkill given the road didn't seem that important or busy. I stopped and waited for Damae and to take a picture of the sunset. She carried on past me and, after catching her up took more effort than normal, I realised that I was rather tired too.
