16 speed Brompton – update

A little good news: the Brompton and the Nexus hub have been re-united in Gol. The only problem is that I am not in Gol. I had to travel back to Holland for a few days to pick up my van and the remains of our stuff.

If all goes well then I should be back home in Norway next weekend. I hope to be able to find some time to start building the back wheel soon.

  1. Sorry, put this comment in Mat before I realised that you had a later post.
How are you getting on with the 8 speed Brommy?
I have 6 speed and, as you say, the gear range is insufficient for touring so I use a Dahon Speed TR. That is an excellent tourer but doesn’t fold as well as the B.
I have a spare Nexus Premium 8 hub and was going to lace it into a 20? rim for my Trice but am now tempted to try it in the Brommy.

  2. We ended up buying two Dahon Speed TR’s because of the limitations of the Bromptons. We got them back in November from having the rear wheels relaced under guarantee (had to take them back to Holland where we bought them, not only is there no Dahon importer for Norway you have to take the bikes back to the country you bought them in to get them fixed).

The spokes kept on coming loose, the first time was after twenty minutes of use, the second sixty-five km later. Not impressed. Otherwise very good value for money. Shame the front brakes judder so much. I will put the Marathon Winter tyres back on the Dahons today or tomorrow so we can test them some more.

Back to the Brompton, I’m not in such a rush at the moment simply because I won’t be able to use it until March at the earliest. There is no visible tarmac here in Gol, snow and ice cover the ground. However I am considering trying to lace the wheel soon. As I have never done this before it will probably take a while.

    Thanks for taking an interest.
